Les Miserables - How Society Affects Human Nature Essays

Les Miserables - How Society Affects Human Nature In Les Miserables, Victor Hugo portrays human nature in a neutral state. Humans are born with neither good nor bad instincts, but rather society affects our actions and thoughts. Hugo portrays the neutral state of mind through Jean Valjean and Cosette. The two extremes of good and evil are represented through Th?nardier and the bishop. Good and evil coexists in the society and affects Valjean and Cosette. It is the two extremes of good and evil that dictate the lives of Valjean and Cosette. The bishop represents charity and love. Everything he's ever had, he gave to charity. When the bishop first met Valjean, he said, "You need not tell me who you are. This is not my house; it is the house of Christ. It does not ask any comer whether he has a name, but whether he has an affliction. You are suffering; you are hungry and thirsty; be welcome. And do not thank me; do not tell me that I take you into my house..... whatever is here is yours." (pg. 15-16) The bishop didn't look at him as a convict; he looked at him as a fellow brother. Later, when the bishop found out that Valjean stole his silver, he wasn't mad, but offered all of his silver to Valjean saying, "Don't forget that you promised me to use this silver to become an honest man." Th?nardier, on the other hand, is the exact opposite of the bishop. He represents the corruptive nature of society. He's the one that changes people for the bad. An example of how Th?nardier represents greed and evil is how he mistreated Cosette when he was taking care of her. He made her wash and clean, while letting his kids run around and play. Th?nardier took advantage of Cosette's mother, Fantine. He kept on asking her for more money, when in fact he didn't really need it. When it was cold, Th?nardier told Fantine that her daughter was cold and they needed money for a wool skirt. This was just an excuse to get money. Also, Th?nardier billed Fantine forty francs to cure a fever that Cosette had supposedly contracted (pg. 56). Fantine had to sell her hair and teeth just to meet Th?nardier's demands. Later, she had to become a prostitute because she didn't have enough money. Jean Valjean was affected by society in many ways. Valjean was poor and needed to feed his family, so he stole a loaf of bread. Consequently, he was sentenced to five years in jail. Trying to escape, Valjean's sentence was lengthened to nineteen years. The harsh treatment that Valjean received from prison corrupted the goodness inside of him and turned him into a bad person. If he wasn't poor, he wouldn't have had to steal. As a result, society beat down on him. Jean Valjean struggled to survive, living in poverty. When he got out of prison, he walked twelve leagues from Toulon (page 13) to Paris, but the people refused to give him a room. Valjean went to all the Inns, but everyone, knowing that he was an ex-convict, refused him. After time, society changed Valjean's human nature. He became good with the help of the bishop. At first, Valjean thought he would always be looked upon as a convict, so he was bad and stole. Valjean described himself as "less than a dog" (pg. 9; 1961 ver.) His last criminal deed was when he stole the coin from little Gervais (pg. 31). When Valjean became M. Madeleine and M. Leblanc, he was good and gave lots of charity. The bishop gave Valjean a sense of hope. He gave him a whole new life. Valjean couldn't have changed without the help of the bishop. Cosette was affected by human nature in many ways as well. She experienced both goodness and evil. At first, Cosette's environment was harsh, therefore, she was harsh. When Cosette lived with Th?nardier, she was deprived of her childhood. Cosette was forced to do all the chores. Thinking that she was a slave child, Cosette had low self-esteem and thought of herself as displeasing and ugly. When Cosette moved in with Valjean,

How To Write Better Content In A Competitive Blog Niche

How To Write Better Content In A Competitive Blog Niche Earlier this year, we took a survey of you, dear users, and asked about some of your content marketing pain points. Here’s what you told us, in order, were the top three hand-wringing struggles for you: Finding enough time to create content. Planning that content. Creating really good content. I second these pain points; I’m with you. That third pain point is pretty wide open. What is really good content? Is it content you feel proud of? Content that performs well? Content that gets a lot of comments and engagement? Content that becomes an evergreen stalwart in your stable? Content you put a lot of work into? Content you learned from? In other words, how do you define â€Å"good content?† How To #Write Better Content In A Competitive #Blog Niche via @JulieNeidlingerDo You Want To Be Liked, Or Do You Want To Learn? Sometimes good content stems from rather bad content. When I studied art in college, I found that, at the end of college, I had come to view a piece of art as a success based on two things: Its likability. These are pieces that I liked, and/or viewers liked. They were visually pleasing in whatever niche they belonged in. For example, I used to do pet portraits for people. I didn’t always love the result in that after a while it felt like yet another dog painting. But, for the client, the likability was clearly there. Its teachability. There are pieces that I hated when I finished (if I finished them), or that took me a long time- sometimes years- to start to like. Yet I considered them a success because I learned something from doing them. Maybe I found a new way to handle a particular medium, or I discovered something about color and shadow. Whatever it was, the image itself didn’t tell the viewer what I learned, necessarily, so the teachability of a piece of art was generally something only I, the artist, could know was in play. I am often proud of pieces that others don’t care for, simply because I know what it taught me. Whee, do I have some uuugleee pieces of art. â€Å"Just light that match. Put it out of its misery.† But those flaming monstrosities taught me something useful and helped me make future likable pieces. I’m guessing, for the most part, that when you told us you wanted to write better  content, you were mainly talking about its likability. You want your audience to like it, talk about it, share it. But here’s the dangerous thing: You can consistently create good content (and good art) without learning anything new. And as a content marketer, failing to always keep learning means one day you are suddenly eons behind everyone else, even though things had been quite successful up to that point. By failing to learn, one day you are suddenly eons behind everyone else. #bloggingMy painting style has changed considerably from college, for example, but I know of another artist from the same background whose style has remained pretty much the same in the past twenty years. There’s nothing wrong with that; her art is quite popular with the public, has a loyal following, and it clearly hits the likability zone. Because her style hasn’t changed much, her audience knows exactly what to expect, and it is a profitable audience. Her art is easily identifiable and has helped establish a kind of creative â€Å"brand† for her. It’s admirable. But it can also be predictable, and tiring. If you hold teachability (i.e. learning from mistakes and taking creative risks) as an aspect of your definition of â€Å"good content†, you will likely see changes in what you create. You will see your audience fluctuate and see dips in your measurable numbers, but you will constantly be pressing into fresh water instead of the same pool. So. Do you want your content to be liked? Or do you want to learn? These two aren’t always exclusive of each other, but in quite a few situations, they are. I would posit that if you want to be a great content creator in the long haul, you have to sometimes give up on your content always being liked and accept the dogs that come from your pen. Those new dogs can teach you something. Sometimes, the best #ContentMarketing comes from your failures. Learn from them to improve.Once you are willing to take a leap and write outside of your current state of likability, you’re ready for the next step. Do You Remember To Look Up To Others? Our own Content Marketing Lead, Nathan, prefers a particular technique that requires a bit of online research to find the top performing content in your niche. â€Å"There are a few ways to write better content, but I only really use the skyscraper technique,†Ã‚  he’s told me, and it makes pretty good sense. As Garrett outlined on an earlier blog post, the skyscraper technique is, at its most basic, a three-step process: Find top performing content. Write  better content than the current top performers. Try to get a bunch of people to link to your new content. It’s the second step, I’m guessing, where the questions lie. How do you write  Ã¢â‚¬Å"better† content than someone else? As Garrett points out (and as I’ve mentioned before), you have to dissect the content. (Who knew dissection was such a thing for content marketers!) He suggests looking for: Average content length. Average number of images. Overall quality of content (rank from 1–10). Specific keywords/key-phrases used. You might also consider other more abstract aspects of the content as to what makes it a success, such as: Hierarchy:  Expert or beginner? Proximity: Did the content succeed because it was so dead-on accurate for a specific audience? Would that approach work as well for yours? Impact:  How did the content directly impact the reader’s life topically or anecdotally? Trendiness:  Is the content evergreen, or was it successful for a certain time frame only? Strangeness:  Is the content so unexpected that people are thrilled to see something new and unusual? Conflict:  Are there â€Å"warring factions† in the content, opposing ideas, and anything that stirs up passion and engagement? Humanity:  Is the content appealing because of its human interest component, stirring up empathy? Essentially, you are trying to figure out what makes a winning, popular, and successful piece of content tick. If it’s outside of your usual style or approach, this will be challenging. You’ll have to rethink why that piece of content is so good. One thing that’s important to note is that if you are trying to track and rate content, you are going to have to create standards (your own, or someone else’s recommendations) and assign numerical values for anything that is abstract in nature. For example, Garrett suggested you assign, on a scale of 1–10, a quality rank. Perhaps you define quality based on typos, grammar, whitespace, unique research, interviews, or some other characteristic. Whatever scale you use, and whatever standards you set for yourself, you will need to be consistent. Research what content already exists, then plan to #write something even better. Here's how.Once you figure out why a piece of content did so well for someone else (and you have concrete measurements even for the abstract), you can be that person who always has to top everyone  and who goes and writes even better content. Are You Always Scanning The Horizon? My first car was a Chrysler Plymouth Horizon, and if I wanted to get good radio reception, I had to roll down the front passenger window. Fine in the summer, excruciating in the winter. In order to bear the cold air, I had to turn up the heat. The heater fan was so loud, that I had to turn up the radio. It was a vicious cycle that meant, by the time I pulled into the yard on the drive home from school, I was one of those ridiculous people whose radio is so loud that all the plastic parts of the car are rattling. Take a look at this beauty. That is not the Horizon you should be on the lookout for. In the previous step, you were to look up to individual examples of top performing content, figure out why it was up there so high, and do your own version but better. Most bloggers have peaks and valleys of content success; you might have found a few one hit wonders in your skyscraper analysis. And then there are bloggers who are consistently creating good content. They might have had a few skyscraper pieces, but maybe not. What they generally have is authority, and authority is less susceptible to peaks and valleys, and more even-keeled. How do you become an authority on something? GEORGE: Wow, Keith Hernandez. He's such a great player. JERRY: Yeah, he's a real smart guy too. He's a Civil War buff. GEORGE: I'd love to be a Civil War buff. ... What do you have to do to be a buff? JERRY: So Biff wants to be a buff? ... Well sleeping less than 18 hours a day would be a start. - From Seinfeld â€Å"The Boyfriend (1)† There are people who are an authority, and there are people who call themselves an authority. There are some who might say that being an authority is more than just being an expert. An expert merely knows a lot, while an authority has the power to wield that expertise. Let’s take that approach, then, with the idea being that you first have to be an expert before you can be an authority. Becoming an expert. What does an expert look like to you? For me, it’s someone who: Has â€Å"paid their dues† and worked a long time at something. Has a broad variety of experiences in their niche, with lots of useful anecdotes to tell about them. Talks about what they’ve learned in a transparent way. Can show actual success and that they practice what they preach. Backs up their claims. Shares ideas, interpretations, facts, and knowledge that aren’t commonly found elsewhere. You can become an expert, then, by hard work, constant learning, willingness to make mistakes, and an openness to talking about what you’ve learned and what you’re still learning. Reading books, taking classes online, attending conferences, working a job where you gain experience, finding a mentor, teaching others so you learn as you teach, and having the patience to stick with it over time- this is how you build expertise. Becoming an authority. Being an authority is almost a state of being where people have given you permission to direct how they think. That sounds a bit creepy, but it’s not far off. You can holler and scream that you are an authority all you want, but if no one is listening to you, it’s clear you are not. How do you get people to give you permission to be an authority over them in your niche? Don’t be a jerk, but don’t be a doormat.  Have an opinion based in your expertise, and be willing to voice it. And then, if things go poorly... Take the high road.  Be willing to leave an ugly argument with respectful words and grace. Be an encourager, and be respectful.  Engage with people in an individual, helpful, and honest way. Don’t get a reputation for being a brash loudmouth who insults people. You might get fame, and you might get known, but you won’t really be an authority. Don’t chase after fame.  Using sketchy tactics to get momentary shares, attention, and fame is not the behavior of someone who is authority material, someone who is confident enough in their skills, patience, and ability. Be consistent. We are always preaching consistency and planning here at (hence the editorial calendar!), and consistency is part of being an authority. People trust the authority, and they build trust based on the sense that they know what to expect from you. Consistent content, social media presence, and engagement are crucial. Step out of the limelight.  Curation  is a powerful aspect of authority. It’s you, sharing and promoting the good work of others. It shows you’re not a glory hog, and that you’re not in it for yourself. Ask for help.  Reach out to other people and ask for their genuine  help or their opinion. It humanizes you. Be helpful first, self-promotional last.  How many times do you use the word â€Å"I† in your copy? Are you about you, or are you about others? This is a bit tricky. Authority isn’t necessarily being well-known (though it can be), but is that peculiar state where people stop and listen when you start to speak. If you want authority so bad you can taste it, chances are you won’t get it. Authority flows out of you having a genuine desire to be an expert and a genuine desire to use that expertise to help other people. How Will You Write Better Content To Stand Out From Your Competition? In summary, there are a million ways to approach the question, â€Å"How do I write better  content?†, but for this post, I wanted to give you a three-step personal assessment: Do you want to be liked, or do you want to learn? Do you know, and can you define, what successful content looks like? Have you put in the time to be an expert, and the personality to be an authority? There are so many great content creators out there. Which do you consider to be an authority, and why?

Aspects of microeconomics and macroeconomics

Aspects of microeconomics and macroeconomics On this assignment will be looking into different aspect of microeconomics and macroeconomics, will be taken into consideration the definition and concept of the whole question as follow below. Part 1 (Micro section) Q1 To help understands by defining Demand that is the quantity of a good which consumers want, and are prepared and able to pay for. In this case the demand of organic food and drink has fallen sharply, and the main influence for fallen on demand for those products are: price; income; the price of substitute goods; the price of complements; taste; demographic factors; advertising and expectations. Price is one of the most important factors and it shift demand curve when it rises, the effect is shown by a movement along the demand curve, because consumers are likely to substitute cheaper alternative goods. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikibooks/en/c/c1/DemandCurveMovementExample2.png The demand curve is downward-sloping, showing that as a price falls, demand rises, and vi ce versa. In this graphic, a reduction of price from P2 to P1 causes a rise in demand from Q2 to Q1. Usually, the more people earn, the more they will spend. The demand for most goods increase as income rises, and these goods are known as normal goods. And organic food and drink are normal goods, because the demand falls as consumers’ income falls, and vice versa. Demand can change sometimes, because of the expectation of price changes in the future. For example, post-Christmas sales may push customers to postpone spending until January. In an article entitled Food Price, Ellis makes the point that (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦) â€Å"The proportion of shoppers buying organic food dropped by five per cent in the previous year. In July 2009, research carried out by marketing consultancy Cohn and Wolfe also reported that British shoppers are turning their backs on premium foods, organic produce and Fair-trade goods. According to the Cohn and Wolfe report, 69 per cent of shoppers say they i ntend to stick to their belt-tightening shopping practices even after the downturn ends† (†¦). www.bbc.co.uk/food/food_matters/foodprices.shtml#what_about_the_recession. Q2 The production possibility frontier illustrates the problems of scarcity and choice and the opportunity cost of resources allocation decisions. The opportunity cost of something is what you give up to get it. To understand the idea the economy, which produce two goods as manufacturing and financial services, with all resources employed, producing more financial services can only be achieved by some sacrifice on manufacturing services. It can be illustrated on diagram below shown. B A 0 The frontier shows all the maximum possible outputs given the economy’s existing quantity of resources. It can have any combination of goods along the line. Point A shows a society which is failing to use all of its resources to the full, either through inefficiency or unemployment. Point B is currently unachievab le, but can be achieved throw economic growth. The shape of the curve is bowed outwards to the origin, is based on the notion of that society progressively allocates more resources to the production of a particular good, the opportunity cost of doing so will increase. In other words the curve is bold because the more input the less is the output.

Movie osama Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Movie osama - Essay Example My mother and I are left with little to no options. My mother, feeling like there is no other option, has had the idea to dress me as a boy in order for me to seek employment. She has opted to call me ‘Osama’ and we both are desperately concerned that the Taliban will discover my true identity if we are not very careful. I must embark on a journey to find employment as a boy in order for my mother and I to have enough money to survive. I am only 12 and it is hard for me to understand the stringency and rules being placed on the society in which I live, especially when they create such a difficult environment for women and girls. Every moment of every day must be planned out in advance if one is female, in order to make sure that there is a male to provide accompaniment. If a woman does happen to venture out on her won, the Taliban will surely punish her. These patriarchal rules make being female not only next to impossible, but almost ike one is living under a curse. It is as though women are such lesser beings that they must cover their faces and bodies to hide every part of themselves from view. I dream of living in a place where the patriarchy of the Taliban does not dictate every move of one’s life and where women are not only free to experience sunlight on their skin, but are also able to leave their homes without a man. I long for this burden of making ends meet to be lifted from my mother as well as from me. It is so difficult to survive under circumstances where one needs to work alone but tot hen not be permitted to do so is painfully difficult. I do not like the culture in which I live and am accustomed. I want to leave this place but feel trapped as though I will be stuck here all of my days. I do not feel that thi culture offers me any type of future as a female. I watch my mother and can see how years of thi type of oppression have weighed her down and made her who she is today. I dislike

Evolution of Internet Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Evolution of Internet Paper - Essay Example With the evolution of internet, devices used to support it have also developed and am outstanding example of these devices is the router. In this part of question, this paper is going to research on three companies (TRENDNet, D-Link and Linksys) selling high-speed router products. It will also compare the most powerful routers sold, as well as elaborating meaning of the term, ‘most powerful’ as with regard to routers. A router is a networking device that analyzes data and forwards it to a certain destination. To transfer the data efficiently and accurately, a lot of activity takes place inside the router. In addition to enabling most computers to go online, it enables computer networking in the most effective way (Zdnet 2012). There are different companies that manufacture high speed routers. The best examples of such companies are TRENDNet, D-Link, and Linksys which deal with high speed routers. Their routers can handle the bandwidth that one subscribes with an internet of 1 mbps connection which can go up to 12 mbps. The TRENDNet Company in California has been supporting home and business networks. Among the products TRENDNet, Company deals with are, high speed routers like TRENDnet TW100 BRV214 and TRENDnet TW100 S4W1CA, and are connected to a modem via Ethernet port (Zdnet 2012). D-link is another company which has developed technology products for two and half decades. It offers solutions for large corporations, educational and government institutions as well as home and office. The company also offers high speed routers like the D-link DI 704p and D-link DIR-130 Broadband VPN Router (Zdnet 2012). Just like the TRENDnet routers, D-link’s routers are connected to a modem via Ethernet. The third company that deals with high speed routers is Linksys, which has been providing technology solutions for long. The company has high speed routers with high performance like; Linksys E4200 dual band wireless-N router and RV042 router (Zdnet 2012). Linksys routers are slimmer than those of the other two companies. They are other software that accompanies these routers to enable the user to get the optimum benefit. High speed routers should be connected in the correct configuration order of modem, router then computer as analyzed in the Introduction to High Speed Routers (2009). The modem connects to internet provider, then the high speed router connects to the modem, and the computer connects to the high speed router. To me the most powerful router can be defined by the ability of the router to enable computer networking, the high speed in downloading files from the internet, the one which does not require antennae to tap signals. The router should also be able to connect wireless-G and wireless-N without complications, and should have the ability to set up a separate network for each band. Week 4 DQ 2 Since 1997 The American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) has been responsible for the administration of internet addresses and domains for parts of the Caribbean and North America including Canada and United states. The decision by the American government to have the US department of defense secede from the support for commercial internet inspired its formation (Comer 2000). One of its services is the Whois service, which can be used to determine address blocks for institutions within the United States. It can also be used to determine geographical locations of specific internet provider addresses. In this part of question,

Ideal Age Paper Essay Example for Free

Ideal Age Paper Essay One will fall into one of Marcia’s identity statues: identity diffusion, identity foreclosure, moratorium, and identity achievement. With finding out who you are and taking on new challenges in this stage you are consistently moving backward and forwards. Than after you have figured out who you want to be, you look for love and a career. Early adulthood in my opinion is the most important and best time of your life. The first reason I think that early adulthood is the ideal age is because in this age everything is new and exciting. After you graduate high school you get to leave the nest and go off to college and make something of yourself. It is s a time of growth and change and therefore, of confusion, self-doubt and insecurity, but it will make the person you going to be. â€Å"The college and post-college years can be an incredibly exciting time as one looks ahead and plans for the future. However, the options can sometimes feel overwhelming† (1). As I said before in early adulthood you are constantly moving backward and forward. As Belsky said, â€Å"early adulthood is testing out different possibilities, focusing on self-development, and feeling in between†. This may be why early adult hood to me may be the most exciting because it is one on the hardest times of your life because everything is new, but its so new its exciting. The second reason I think early adulthood is the ideal age is because you figure out who you are in this stage of your life. In the book Belsky said that we are transforming our childhood self into the person were going to be as adults and he called this process the search for identity. You learn responsibility and learn that you have to take on your new role in life as an adult. This is one of the most important things in life, finding out who you are and where you fit in the world, that’s why early adulthood is so important. Also since this period in your life is so important serious conditions, such as violent events, depression and eating disorders, can negatively impact early adults and hurt the finding of your identity (2). On the path to finding identity four different identity statues come up. The first is identity diffusion where teens are transition into adulthood with no goals and life has no appeal. The second is identity foreclosure, where they uncritically adopt a life handed down to them by some authority. The third is moratorium, which is engaged in the exciting, healthy search for adult life. And the fourth is identity achievement, the end point where one finally knows what they want to be as an adult. This process can be so exciting and stressful but when you look back you will realize it was all worth it to get to the person you want to become. The third and most important reason why I think early adulthood is the best age group is because you find love in this stage. This is Erikson’s second emerging adult task, intimacy or finding committed love. Over the decades it has changed dramatically in recent decades. In the book Belsky spells out a three-stage process leading to marriage called Stimulus-value-role theory. First we select a potential partner who looks appropriate, the stimulus phase. Then the value-comparison phase, we find out whether that person shares our interests and worldviews. Then finally during the role phase we plan our lives together. Homogamy is the main principle in this theory. Finding love is so important and fun because with out it you could spend your whole life alone. Then once you find love to keep it you just have to follow Sternbug’s triangular theory of love. Which is passion, intense, physiological desire for another person, intimacy self-disclosure leading to connection, warmth, trust and commitment staying with that person through thick and thin (3). In conclusion early adulthood from your twenties to forties is the ideal age. Physically, it is a time where we are our healthiest and will reach our peak performance. Cognitively, it is a time to grow up and make life decisions. And emotionally, it is a time to take on roles of independence, lifestyles, and marriage (4). Also Seven out of 10 people aged 40 or older said that 33 was the best year of their lives, with many saying they had more fun and felt more optimistic and that age falls under early adulthood (5). Early adulthood is full of excitement and is the most important stage in your life. You find out who you are and you find love. So in my opinion thirty flirty and thriving are the best years of your life.

Qualitative Research for Instructional Technology Essay -- Qualitative

Qualitative Research for Instructional Technology Background: A trend of the past several years has been the growing use of qualitative research for educational research. Qualitative research, broadly defined, means "any kind of research that produces findings not arrived at by means of statistical procedures or other means of quantification. Where quantitative researchers seek causal determination, prediction, and generalization of findings, qualitative researchers seek instead illumination, understanding, and extrapolation to similar situations. Qualitative analysis results in a different type of knowledge than does quantitative inquiry. " (Hoepfl, 1997, p.13). "During the past several decades, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s, naturalistic inquiry (or qualitative research) has gained considerable acceptance. Nevertheless, the debate between quantitative and qualitative methodologies, as competing positions, persists. It is important to recognize the limitations of viewing quantitative and qualitative methods as completely differen t or competing approaches" (Custer, 1996, p. 4). What exactly are the basic differences between the two forms of research? Hoepfl (1997) explains it by saying that "phenomenological inquiry, or qualitative research, uses a naturalistic approach that seeks to understand phenomena in context-specific settings. Logical positivism, or quantitative research, uses experimental methods and quantitative measures to test hypothetical generalizations (p. 14)". Custer (1996) also points out that "the qualitative-quantitative dichotomy dates back as early as the 17th century where quantitativists were characterized by some as ‘vulgar statisticians’". Basic Features: The following list... ...." The decision to use qualitative methodologies should be considered carefully, though. "By its very nature, qualitative research can be emotionally taxing and extraordinarily time consuming. At the same time, it can yield rich information not obtainable through statistical sampling techniques" (Hoepfl, 1997, p. 37). References Custer, R. L. (1996). Qualitative research methodologies. Stefan’s Diaries: The Craving Chapter 26

â€Å"What are you doing here?† I demanded. Lexi raised a brow at me. â€Å"Same thing you are. Looking forward to a long, painful eternity together.† â€Å"No, I mean why didn't you run?† I asked, resisting the urge to take her by the shoulders and shake her. â€Å"Of course I ran, you idiot!† she snapped. â€Å"But I guess he expected I would†¦. I never even saw him come after me.† I could feel her shiver in the dark. â€Å"He appeared out of nowhere.† Her voice grew grim. â€Å"I wonder if that's how humans feel when they meet us. If we ever get out of this, I swear I am going to be nicer to them in the future. Humans, I mean. That vampire – now him I want to kill.† I put my hand on her forearm, softening. â€Å"I just pray we get that chance.† â€Å"Come, let's get out of here.† She turned and swung her leg, putting the heel of her boot smack into the middle of the doors. There was a resounding thud, but nothing budged. She delivered another roundhouse kick to the doors. And another. And another. Again, nothing happened. â€Å"Together!† she insisted. On the count of three we both kicked. â€Å"Maybe there's vervain in the stone†¦ ?† I suggested. Lexi looked grim. â€Å"Vervain doesn't make things indestructible. But there are other things that can be done to lock something up. Permanently. What about the walls?† For the next hour we ran our fingers over the white walls, ceilings, and floors, our highly sensitive skin picking out even the most minute gaps. We ripped open sarcophagi, ransacked the corpses for tools. â€Å"No knives, no diamond crosses, no silver-plate Bibles, no pennies for Charon, no lucky stone, no nothing,† I growled, throwing my hands up in frustration. â€Å"This doesn't look good,† was all Lexi said. Twenty-four hours later there was a service in the chapel. We could hear it with our Powers. It was a memorial to the Sutherlands, to the two brides who were killed, to the proud parents†¦ along with a biting invective against the young men who did it, running off with the dowry money. Murderers, thugs, con men, robbers†¦ The only accusation that didn't make the list was â€Å"demon.† But none of the insults stopped us from screaming. â€Å"Help!† I yelled. â€Å"In here! We're in here!† Lexi added her voice to mine, screeching in different high-pitched tones that nearly blew out my eardrums. At one point I could hear a hollow-voiced Hilda whisper, â€Å"Do you hear something?† And our hopes were raised. And then nothing. The service ended, people filed out, and once again we were completely, utterly alone. With sigh, Lexi gave me my ring back. â€Å"Many thanks for its loan,† she said quietly, slipping it on my finger. â€Å"But I don't think it will do me – or you – much good now.† I hugged her tight. â€Å"Don't give up yet,† I whispered in her ear. But the words echoed hollowly within the crypt, having nowhere else to go.

DEDICATION We dedicate this research work to our subject teacher who never failed to teach and guide us, to our family who supports us in everything, to our friends who helped to finish this project and most of all to the Almighty  God who gives us strength and good health while doing this. ABSTRACT Monitoring of attendance is recognized as an important element in supporting both student and faculty performance. Regular and appropriate attendance has been a school requirement for them to know how they perform in schools. The faculty members, failure to attend or absence without permission can result in some serious consequences in place. Many schools therefore already have in place effective methods for monitoring the students and faculty members’ attendance and absences. The Proponent’s came up to conduct a study on their chosen system. The Global Reciprocal Colleges are using a manual process in terms of monitoring and checking attendance that may cause some problems. The current problems that are loss of attendance sheet so that they cannot properly monitor the attendance of their Faculty members. They cannot properly monitor concerning to salary deduction. Lastly because some of the faculty has no designated rooms they are going to use different rooms, this is also one of the factors that the guard who are in charge in checking of attendance may got mistaken. In this study, the proponents aim to provide a better way of monitoring the attendance of Faculty members of Global Reciprocal Colleges. In order for the Human Resource Department can handle faster and easy way of recording and monitoring the daily attendance of the Faculty. The system will provide an efficient way of record keeping activity. This study aims to provide better results of Faculty Attendance Monitoring System that can cover up with the school needs. The study of this procedure is important because many school’s encounter the same problem during their attendance monitoring. It may become stepping stone in a more organize and productive system of procedures in the future The system holds the information about the professors log in and log out from the school and only the Human Resource Department can see the professor’s attendance. If the teacher input his/her user name and password it is automatically registered as log in or log out. The teachers automatica lly mark absent if he/she didn’t input his/her thumb in the biometric during the day. This study wants to help schools to be  innovated involving the use of computerization inside the campus and also for future proponents that will be involve in this kind of study. CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION As time goes by many industries such as schools and business were experiencing much technological advancement and changes in way of improving to achieve its goals. With the booming number of people using technology, it becomes easier to do different task for each department or aspects. One of this is the Faculty Attendance Monitoring. Instead of doing manual checking of attendance that makes the process more time consuming and sometimes it is not accurate in time in and out. This is one of the problems of Global Reciprocal Colleges in Caloocan, dealing with this problem of an easy way to do the checking of attendance. We, the proponents come up with a computerized Faculty Attendance Monitoring using biometrics. It serves as a time log-in/log-out system that is set up as a computerized database. This system maintains a daily record of a person’s arrival and departure time from work. Aside from the records of time and date, our system features the name, position and the assigned number of each staff. So it also serves as an identification profile system. The system also protects the employees by providing the exact number of hours they worked, making it much more difficult for employers to cheat them out of their wages. This thesis features all important facts about our system as well as its importance. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY The system we are proposing will use biometrics to record the attendance of the faculty members of GRC. We, the proponents noticed that the existing manual system gives an inaccurate result of attendance. To avoid this problem, the proponents come up with the solution of creating a system that uses fingerprints that will serve as a unique identification for the faculty. The system should also provide the daily report of the records. Statement of the Problem Nowadays, many colleges are using a different system in checking and monitoring the attendance of the faculty member. There are some instances that the administration and faculty member encounter a problem. General problem: How accurate, efficient and reliable does the said proposed system to faculty and Human Resource Department of Global Reciprocal Colleges? Specific problem: How would it help to lessen the room and scheduling conflicts? How accuracy does the proposed system in terms of monitoring the schedule of each faculty? How efficiency the existing attendance monitoring system? How reliable the proposed system in terms of security? Objectives of the Study General Objective: To develop a system that will help to check and monitor the attendance of faculty member and their designated rooms. Specific Objective: To create a system that can avoid conflicts in terms checking of room and attendance of each faculty member. With the help of this system it becomes easier for the guards who are assigned in checking and monitoring rooms to determine if the faculty member is on time or not. And if they are in their designated rooms. To lessen the use of paper because in this system it will going to use a biometric device that produce a summarized report. Conceptual Paradigm A paradigm is about the old system of Global Reciprocal Colleges. and proposed system of the proponents.Grc has a manual process in terms of checking the attendance and monitoring of classrooms .Before the faculty member go to their respective classroom they will going to log-in in the log book to have their attendance .The Hr will going to input one by one in the excel the data given by the guards who are in charge with it. In our system The faculty will going to have attendance in biometrics with their thumb print to avoid —- and security and to ensure that the following faculty members is the one log-in and out in the attendance . The system with the  use of biometric will only accept those thumbprint of those faculty member who are only assigned in the particular rooms else they will not going to have their attendance. Then the proposed system will have a daily report of attendance in the particular day. Conceptual Framework INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT BENEFITS Scope and Delimitations Scope: In the proposed system it will focus in Monitoring and also the attendance of each faculty member of Global Reciprocal Colleges. The system will have a security account for the Hr department who is in charge of monitoring it .It also provide the real time of log in and out of the faculty members .It also assured that the faculty is present and will avoid proxy in terms of logging in because of the biometric which only accept the thumb print of the specific member in particular classroom. The system have a daily report, Update if ever the admin want to delete add . It also has two accounts for the guest and for the hr (admin). The proposed system have limitation s. It cannot calculate the wage of each faculty member .It cannot access to a network and. Importance of the Study This system will be beneficial in terms of monitoring rooms and for the attendance checking of each faculty members. This system will also help them by the use of biometrics which let the faculty member have their attendance by means of their thumbprint. First is for the faculty member which may benefit in terms of having specific rooms. In this system each rooms having biometric which has a data determining whose faculty member can only access in designated room. Second is for the Human Resource Department (HR) which is going to be the admin of this proposed system. It will easy for them to create a summary report of attendance which is accurate, organize and secured data. Third is for the proponents who conducted this study for them to serve and to acquire their knowledge to come up and to meet the demand of the user. It also helps the proponents to apply what they’ve learned to make this proposed system possible. Definition of Terms 1. Biometrics – refers to metrics related to human characteristics and traits. Biometrics authentication (or realistic authentication) is used in computer science as a form of identification and access control. It is also used to identify individuals in groups that are under surveillance. Example: Fingerprint 2. Fingerprint – A fingerprint in its narrow sense is an impression left by the friction ridges of a human finger. 3. Data – facts or information used usually to calculate, analyze, or plan something. 4. Visual Basic .net – is a multi-paradigm, high level programming language, implemented on the .NET Framework. Microsoft launched VB.NET in 2002 as the successor to its original Visual Basic language. Along with Visual C#, it is one of the two main languages targeting the .NET framework. 5. Microsoft SQL – is a relational database management system developed by Microsoft. As a database, it is a software product whose primary function is to store and retrieve data as requested by other software applications, be it those on the same computer or those running on another computer across a network (including the Internet). CHAPTER 2 Review of Related Literature and Studies Local STUDY 1. Local Literature A computerized system that will facilitate a faster and easier checking of faculty’s attendance during the implementation departmental and/or institutional program is now being utilized at the School of CSIT. The system was developed by Mr. Rogie B. Tabmidiman IT instructor whose objectives in developing the system are the following to make the checking attendance easier and faster, to keep accurate records of the faculty’s attendances, to eradicate or at least minimize complaints of faculties on  erroneous data on attendance and to inspire IT faculties to develop computerized system that will make processes easier. 2. Local Studies Security is the degree of protection against danger, damage, loss and criminal activity. Securities as a form of protection are structures and processes that provide or improvement security as a condition. It is indeed a great demand and can somehow be a great loss if it’s prevented. Security with the human responsibility and interference are now at risk of loss because of the technology that certain machines can do. One of this is the swipe card technology. Faculty Attendance Monitoring and Announcement information system with SMS alert is known as essential part of the school security in terms of attendance checking and performance of certain faculty combines with swipe card technology. The Proponents aim to come up with the solution for a secured, fast, and accurate system that will answer the parents, faculty concerns for the faculties. Foreign STUDY 1. Attendance monitoring – This document aims to provide schools with guidance on attendance monitoring and absence reporting for all students. Monitoring of attendance is recognised as an important element in supporting both student retention and performance and has been a University requirement for many years. In addition, the document includes information on the requirements of the UK Border Agency (UKBA) under the Points Based System applicable to international students. MONITORING STUDENT ATTENDANCE IMPLEMENTATION PROPOSALS: GUIDANCE PAPER FOR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS, COURSE AND PROGRAMME DIRECTORS AND POSTGRADUATE SUPERVISORS Updated 19 January 2010 This paper outlines plans for monitoring student attendance in the University of Edinburgh Uk. 2. Foreign Studies College and school staff will be aware that UK boarder Agency (UKBA) has  introduced new regulations governing the immigration of staff and faculties to the UK, an initiative instigated by the previous prime Minister in 2004 which are closely modeled on those devised by Australia some years ago. Under the new regulations faculties will have to submit certain material when they apply for a course. The university will have to keep records on all overseas faculties. It will have to verify faculty’s identity when they arrive, and will have to keep track of the faculties as they progress through the degree programmed and report them to the relevant authorities if they fail to attend. This paper focuses purely on these latter requirements on how we propose to manage the work associated with monitoring the attendance of UG and PG faculties. CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY Research Methods Used To make this proposed system possible we, the proponents use some of research methods. The survey method which serve as our detail to determine the problem in monitoring and checking the attendance. It also gives the proponents a data to use in the system. The library methods which give us ideas through searching regarding to the proposed system. Locale of the Study The locale of the study is the faculty members of Global Reciprocal Colleges. Respondent of the Study The respondent of the proposed system are the HR department who are the one collecting the attendance. The faculty members who are going to use biometrics in terms of attendance via biometrics.

How to Make Saline Solution at Home

How to Make Saline Solution at Home Saline solution refers to a salt solution, which you can prepare yourself using readily available materials. The solution can be used as a disinfectant, sterile rinse, or for lab work. This recipe is a salt solution that is normal, which means it is the same concentration or isotonic to body fluids. The salt in saline solution discourages bacterial growth while rinsing away contaminants. Because the salt composition is similar to that of the body, it causes less tissue damage than you would get from pure water. Saline Solution Materials Technically, a saline solution results whenever you mix any salt with water. However, the easiest saline solution consists of sodium chloride (table salt) in water. For some purposes, its fine to use freshly mixed solution. In other cases, youll want to sterilize the solution. Keep the purpose in mind when you mix the solution. If for example, you are simply rinsing your mouth with saline solution as a dental rinse, you can mix any amount of table salt with warm water and call it good. If, however, you are cleaning a wound or want to use the saline solution for your eyes, its important to use pure ingredients and maintain sterile conditions. Salt:Â  You can use salt from the grocery store. Its best to use non-iodized salt, which does not have iodine added to it. Avoid using rock salt or sea salt, since the added chemicals may cause problems for some purposes.Water:Â  Use distilled water or reverse osmosis purified water over ordinary tap water. You want 9 grams of salt per liter of water or 1 teaspoon of salt per cup (8 fluid ounces) of water. Prepare the Saline Solution As a mouth rinse, you can simply dissolve the salt into very warm water. You may even wish to add a teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). For a sterile solution, dissolve the salt in boiling water. Keep the solution sterile by placing a lid on the container so that no microorganisms get into the liquid or airspace as the solution cools. Foodcollection RF / Getty Images You can dispense the sterile solution into sterile containers. Sterilize containers either by boiling them or by treating them with a disinfecting solution, such as the type sold for home brewing or making wine. Its a good idea to label the container with the date and to discard it if the solution is not used within a few days. This solution could be used for treating new piercings or for wound care. Its important to avoid contaminating the liquid, so ideally make just as much solution as you need at a time, allow it to cool, and discard leftover liquid. The sterile solution will remain suitable for lab use for several days in its sealed container, but you should expect some degree of contamination once it is opened. Contact Lens Solution Although it is the proper salinity, this solution is not suitable for contact lenses. Commercial contact lens solution contains buffers that help protect your eyes, plus the solution includes agents to help keep the liquid sterile. Although homemade sterile saline could work to rinse lenses in a pinch, it is not a viable option unless you are familiar with aseptic techniques and use lab-grade chemicals.

The Internet Bubble Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The Internet Bubble - Research Paper Example During this period, investors believed that a new era had begun with the internet sector seeing a 1000% growth in only two years, which equaled nearly 6% of the US’ market capitalization and more than 20% of equity volume traded publicly in the US. The bubble hit its peak in early 2000 with a score of 5,048.62 on NASDAQ (Kraay & Ventura, 2011). During this period, the sector saw increased establishment of internet companies that were referred to as Dotcom companies, taken from the suffix at the end of their URL. This bubble burst between the years 2000 and 2002 as NASDAQ saw a loss in value of over 80% with companies, for instance Pets.com, failing completely with more than $7 trillion destroyed in market value (Kraay & Ventura, 2011). This paper seeks to detail what happened during this period, why it transpired, the way it could have been prevented, as well as the main players in the internet bubble. The internet was responsible for creating a euphoric attitude in the 90s, in spiring hopes for the internet as online commerce’s future. This led to the formation of many dotcom companies hoping that they would be worth millions. However, most of these companies were not very successful as those that were overvalued (Perkins & Perkins, 2009). This resulted in these companies crashing, leaving significant losses to be handled by the investors. The collapse, in fact, precipitated the stock market crash of 2001 more than 9/11 did, costing investors $5 trillion. The mid to late 90s saw unrealistic expectations from the public regarding what the internet had to offer. Internet entrepreneurs invested in the hope of becoming internet billionaires, inspiring companies like Kozmo, eBay, and Amazon. However, for every internet company that became a success, hundreds of others collapsed. Most investors ignored fundamental rules of the stock market such as the analysis of P/E ratio, reviewing business plans, and the study of market plans (Perkins & Perkins, 2009) . They, instead, became pre-occupied with ideas that had no proven potential in the market. Factors that Led to the Internet Bubble Burst Two basic factors contributed to this phenomenon. The first was the utilization of metrics that were ignorant of cash flow. Most analysts laid emphasis on aspects of individual entrepreneurship that were not concerned with how to generate cash flow or revenue. One theory contends that the bubble burst due to the investors’ pre-occupation with what was referred to as the network theory, which stated that a network’s value increased exponentially. In addition, the number of nodes increased (Adams, 2009). While this made sense, it neglected the company’s ability utilizing the network for cash generation and making the investors a profit. Secondly, most of the internet company stocks were overvalued. On top of focusing metrics that were unnecessary, analysts made use of high multipliers in formulas and models in the valuation of t he companies, resulting in overly optimistic and unrealistic values (Adams, 2009). While the conservative analysts were not in agreement, the recommendations they made were
